Exeter City gave another disappointing display in front of their own supporters and were very unimpressive in this draw with Chesterfield, They never got going and were far too slow on many occasions, The passing, especially in the first half left a lot to be desired and they were half hearted in the tackle, George Ley was the only man to come out of the game with credit.

Chesterfield scored after only three minutes, Hollett was left unmarked to steer the ball past Ken Jones from the corner of the penalty area, City were not looking good at all and were fortunate not to concede further goals, They were lacking imagination in their play. After 29 minutes City were awarded a free kick, Ley floated the ball over perfectly for Dixie McNeil to head home.

In the second half City still lacked the necessary urgency and Chesterfield were allowed to have more of the play than they should have done, Ley who was prominent in defence found time to move forward to shoot from 25 yards and apart from McNeil he looked like the only City player willing to have a go. In the closing minutes City pressed hard for the first time, but it was too late.

Exeter City gave another disappointing display in front of their own supporters, and were very unimpressive in this drawn game with Chesterfield. They never got going properly and were too slow on many occasions. In the first half particularly their passing left a lot to be desired and they were also half-hearted in the tackle. George Ley was the only man to come out of this game with credit. He worked hard in his defensive role, and his attacking bursts very often troubled the Chesterfield rearguard. In the third minute Hollett was left unmarked, and he steered the ball past Jones in the culmination to a move by Chesterfield which started in their own half of the field. Exeter levelled the scores against the run of the play after half an hour when McNeil headed a free kick from Ley past Osborne.

  • John Wingate, a six-foot centre forward from Budleigh Salterton, has signed amateur forms for Exeter City, and he was chosen to lead the Reserves' attack against Bridport at St Mary's Field.

Scorer Exeter : Wingate 2,

The City reserves got their first win in five games thanks to a fine debut by 17 year old John Wingate, This promising player had the satisfaction of scoring both goals. City missed several other chances against a poor Bridport combination. After Mustard and Balson had had shots blocked by the home defenders a misunderstanding between Frampton and Walbridge put Wingate clean through, and he calmly chose his spot to fire the ball home and thus score his first goal in Western League football. He followed this up by scoring another goal for Exeter, who won by 2-0
