This was a typical friendly and although there was not a great deal to choose between the sides at the end, Torquay United were undoubtedly the sharper side. There was little evidence of the keen rivalry which is associated with these two Westcountry sides and for the most part it was a game dominated by defence, It was generally dull football with both sides counter attacking, Torquay had the better forward line but did not always take advantage although John Smout had to bring off several fine saves, The nearest either side came to scoring was when Spratt got up well and his header hit the City bar and the ball was scrambled clear, For the last 15 minutes the game began to brighten up with Torquay doing most of the attacking but they didn't get through the tough Exeter defence, City were weak in the forward line, they threatened in midfield but far too many moves broke down in the Torquay half and they were too slow in their build up giving the Torquay defence time to get back and cover any damage,
Match Summary
Exeter City and Torquay United, both out of the Cup, played a goalless drawn game in a friendly at St James's Park. A header from Spratt, of Torquay, that hit the underside of the bar and bounced out, was the nearest that either side came to a goal. Exeter fielded the team which drew at Southend last week.
