An afternoon of tragedy for Exeter City. Apart from collapsing to their heaviest home defeat of the season, they lost centre half Keith Harvey with a broken collar bone 10 minutes before half time, It is the third time that Harvey has broken a collar bone in his long career with Exeter. A minute before the injury Tranmere had gone ahead through Hudson who had only signed for them 48 hours earlier, After half time evil was short for within three minutes from a perfect com Ray Keeley, but Exeter's chances to restore Tranmere's lead after Hudson's shot had rebounded onto the goalline from the crossbar, seven minutes later Tranmere made the game safe when Yardley hooked the ball past John Smout, Ryan forced Cumbes into a couple of brilliant saves, but he was out on his own for much of the time and the strong and reliable Tranmere defence was generally on topCity left half Jimmy Blain completed an afternoon best forgotten by heading into his own net,

Match Summary

Making his home debut, Exeter City's new centre-for ward, Jim Ryan, scored a nice goal, but it was far from enough, as the City went down in the mud to Tranmere by four goals to one. To make matters worse Keith Harvey, the player-cum-trainer, fell in a tackle and was taken to hospital with a broken collar bone. It is the third time that Harvey has broken his collar bone whilst playing for Exeter City. Tranmere deserved their two points. They were easily the better of the two sides, and in the end Exeter were well beaten.
