A Jim Ryan header after 33 minutes gave City the two points aginst Hartlepool United one of the shock sides of the Fourth Division this season. Although they won City had to withstand some terrific pressure in the second half and only some great saves by John Smout stopped Hartlepool, They did everything but score and City the better side in the first half were lucky to win in the end, Hartlepool were content to let City make the running early on and it paid off because Exeter were not making their final passes tell, Phythian missed an easy chance a minute before City took the lead, Ryan heading in Ray Keeley's centre, Exeter deserved this goal as they looked the better side at the time, In the second half Hartlepool came out of their shell and began to cause problems to the City defence. John Smout made some fine saves from both Phythian and Gill, It was only spasmodic attacks from City now and it was a question whether they could hold out, Smout again came to Exeter's rescue tipping a Bircumshaw shot over the bar,
