Despite a lot of second half pressure Exeter City could not get the equaliser against promotion candidates Barrow, On the run of play Eexter perhaps deserved a point, but they missed at least two good chances and paid for this in the end. There was an improvement in Exeter's performance and the game in general was more entertaining, Barrow looked a more than useful side particularly in the first half,

Barrow went ahead in the 19th minute, Mulholland put McCarthy through with a fine passThe winger ran 40 yards with the City defence chasing him and he drew John Smout before scoring with a low shot ionto the corner of the net for a fine goal. Within 5 minutes it was 1-1, Jim Ryan headed in Ray Keeley's cross following a move started by Ray Elliott,

In the 37th minute Smith beat John Smout with a rising shot from the edge of the penalty area to restore Barrow's lead, In the second half Exeter City were making the running, but their finishing was not up to standardJimmy Blain shot wide when well placed. on the run of play City have scored. Despite a lot of pressure in the second half they could not score the equaliser at St James's Park and were beaten by Barrow, who are chasing promotion. On the run of the play the City may have deserved one point, though they missed at least two good chances and paid for this at the end. Yet there was an improvement in the City's performance this week and the game in general was quite entertaining. Barrow looked more than a useful side, particularly in the first half. Ryan's equalising goal in the 24th minute to the one scored eight minutes earlier by McCarthy was a fine diving header, bang on target from Keeley's cross, but Barrow wrapped up the points with an even better goal by Smith, their right half six minutes before half time.
