Match 42
March 15th 1967
Devon Professional Bowl
Plymouth Argyle (h)

Exeter City v Plymouth Argyle
March 15th 1967

Playing for the Devon Professional Bowl at St James's Park

City gave a good performance against rivals Plymouth Argyle, The game went into extra time after a goalless 90 minutes and it was then that Argyle scored the winner in the first period, Bickle, turned and shot, John Smout cleared with his foot but Piper followed up to scoreCity did enough to win and they should have done because they had the chances and missed them,

Argyle goalkeeper Dunne saved his side on several occasions with some fine saves, he was beaten once, that was in the second half, when Peter Godfrey's chip was headed goalwards by Jim Ryan but somehow Nelson got across to clear the ball off the line. There were other near misses, but City should really have taken their opportunities,

Argyle were never impressive, their best player was Bloomfield, He was always trying to produce something better, so did former City favourite Alan Banks, though he did not give the Exeter defence too much trouble. The only time Plymouth looked as if they might get on top was in extra time, yet even then Exeter came close to getting at least an equaliser and a replay,

Exeter City were beaten by Plymouth Argyle by a single goal, scored by Piper, to nil, after the game had gone into extra time, half an hour. The City were as good as their Second Division opponents except in finishing, which let them down again, as it has done so many other times this season.

Attendance 2,705.

The teams were:
City: Smout; Embury and Ley; Wilkinson, Harford, and Thompson; Keeley, Elliott, Ryan, Blain, and Godfrey.

Argyle:- Dunne; Sillett and Baird; Piper, Nelson, and Hore; Etheridge, Banks, Bickle, Bloomfield, and Mitten.

Plymouth Argyle will now play Torquay United at Home Park in the final.

Banks had a quiet game in this, his first appearance at St James's Park since his transfer, and he did not give the Exeter defence a great deal of trouble.

  • The Western League match at Plainmoor between Torquay United and Exeter City Reserves was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.
