Exeter City were beaten by not a particularly good team, Aldershot however, being the more experienced teamExeter did not play as a team. The defence was the strongest part of the side and until 20 minutes into the second half looked as if they might hold Aldershot and earn a point, The forward line hardly ever made an impression on the game, They did not show enough fight or determination and failed to make room for themselves, The ground was hard and bumpy and there were occasions when the bounce of the ball deceived both sides. Aldershot had more of the game but in the first half in particular the Exeter defence worked hard and wellThe City were not completely overun yet their build up was not consturctive enough and they lacked penetration, City had a lucky escape in the 52nd minute when Walton hit the bar. The goal that proved enough for Aldershot came in the 68th minuteJohn Smout partially saved Howarth's shot but the ball ran loose to Kearns who had an easy chance to score, This was an unfortunate goal to concede as Smout had made two particularly fine saves previously in the closing stages, The City defence allowed Aldershot far too much space but their forwards were often too slow and did not take advantage.
Match Summary
An unsuccessful start to Exeter City's Easter programme of three matches brought no points from the opening game at Aldershot. They were beaten by an Aldershot side that was not particularly good but more experienced, and who will be seen in the return fixture at St James's Park on Easter Monday.
Exeter did not play well enough as a team. The defence was as usual the strongest part of the side, and until 25 minutes from the end it looked possible that they might hold Aldershot and get a point. But then Smout could only parry a shot from Howarth, leaving Kearns, who followed up, a simple task to put the ball in the net.
