Defence minded Southport left St James Park satisfied with a point towards their promotion target, but Southport on this display were nothing more than an average side. Both teams tried to play football but they were still not sharp enough in each others penalty areas in the first half, whilst the play was mainly confined to midfield the City did have most of the play. With more fight and determination City could have been ahead, Southport were very disappointing considering their league position, City needed a schemer to try and pierce a defence which has the third best record in the Fourth Division, Both sides were lacking fight in the second half and Southport were obviously content to play out the game, Near the end of the match the tussle began to fall away. City's approach was too slow, Bruce Stuckey was Exeter's best forward and after the interval he continually beat his full back, City pushed players forward but still they could not break down Southport,

FRANK BROOME A POPULAR CHOICE

Demonstrations at St James' Park are a rare sight but seven years ago there were scenes because Frank Broome was leaving the club and the supporters did not want him to go, At one match a City supporter carried a banner around the pitch appealing for Broome to stay, For Broome had been one of Exeter City's most popular managers, but he left in May 1960A week ago, Jock Basford was sacked as manager and three days later City chairman Les Kerslake had completed negotiations for Mr Broome to return to St James Park, Frank Broome is to return from Australia, to take over Exeter City againHe has been coaching a Sydney club and jumped at the chance of getting back into English footballHe knows the set up at the Park and faces a strong challenge when he arrives in three weeks time City narrowly missed promotion the last occasion Broome was in charge in the 1958-59 season and supporters are probably recalling the good days and such players as Gordon Dale, John Nichollsand Ken Oliver to name but a few.
  • Bryce Fulton the former Exeter City defender who came to City from Plymouth Argyle is now captain of the Stockport County reserves team who play in the Cheshire League. He also works in the insurance business in the Manchester area. Some of his former colleagues saw him at Stockport's game with Bradford City, when City stayed in Manchester to play Rochdale last Saturday
