Once more, like in so many games this season, City paid the penalty for their inability to take their chances. In the first half Chesterfield were not playing at all well and City created and missed at least three good chances to stamp their superiority on the game, Ken Thompson was the culprit on two occasions and Jimmy Blain scooped a shot over the bar when well placed. Chesterfield came out with more determination after the interval, but still Exeter did most of the pressing Indeed they had four successive corners which all came to nothing. In the 62nd minute Chesterfield scored with Ernie Wilkinson and Stark lying injured in the City penalty area. The ball was crossed by Hollett and Randall beat John Smout with a header via the post. For a time Exeter lost their edge and Chesterfield looked dangerous John Smout did well to save a curling free kick from Stark, City were not finished however, and with 15 minutes to go, Bruce Stuckey hit the post with a fine shot from 20 yards. Then Dixie McNell' missed an easy chance from eight yards,
