Hull City v Exeter City

Seven up as City tame Tigers

EXETER were in seventh heaven after coming from behind to beat ten man Hull at Boothferry Park.

(Report by David Bond Sunday Independent)

They extended their unbeaten run to seven games following their disappointing start to the season and won at Hull for the first time ever at the seventh attempt. The turning point came in the 31st minute when City striker Gary Chap- man, one of Hull Manager Terry Dolan's old boys at Bradford City, raced onto a long pass from skipper Tom Kelly. He was played onside by Gary Hobson and then brought down by 17-year- old reserve goalkeeper Steve Wilson as he tried to dribble round him. It was a clear case of a professional foul and Wilson, who became the youngest first team player in Hull's history when he made his league debut at home to Plymouth Argyle last May, was immediately sent off by Referee Ken Redfern. The incident certainly enlivened a listless first half, in which there were 16 offside flags, and it was Hull who gained more momentum from it. Defender Lee Warren took over in goal and in the 38th minüte the Tigers went ahead. David Norton sent over a left-footed centre from the right and Leigh Jenkinson glanced his header just inside the post for his third league goal of the season. The Grecians brought on experienced substitute Steve Moran at half time and after 57 minutes he set up a fine chance for Chap- man, but his shot struck Nicky Brown on the line. A minute later, though, Chapman made amends when he beat Hull's square lying defence to move on to a shrewd pass from Steve Williams and score easily as Warren hesitated. Two minutes later Williams and Moran, two of Exeter Manager Alan Bali former Southampton colleagues, conjured up the winner. Williams, who had made a hash of the free kick 20 yards out when Wilson was dismissed, neatly found Moran, who squeezed his shot past Warren from a tight angle. Chapman and Vince Hilaire might then have added to the lead, but Chapman was off target after chasing a pass from Scott Hiley and David Mail cleared off the line after Warren had fumbled Hilaire's drive. And Hull kept plugging away gamely for an equaliser. Gareth Stoker and substitute David Walmsley were just off target and Kevin Miller saved well from Mail and Norton. But Miller kept his best save until last as he brilliantly tipped over a header from Stuart Young when Hull mounted a final onslaught. And it meant that Torquay United are the only visitors not to have won at Boothferry Park in five league games so far this season.
