Match 06
8th September 1964
Shrewsbury Town (away)
SHREWSBURY TOWN 1 (Taylor)
EXETER CITY 0
Tuesday September 8th at Shrewsbury.
The City reverted to their 4 2 4 system and played better than - they did against Mansfield. Shrewsbury's goal was scored after an hour's play by Taylor, whose shot was pushed against a post and into his own net by Barnett.
A point would have done Exeter City justice at Shrewsbury. A performance like this at the Park would have re-assured City supporters that this side has not completely gone to pot, There was a vast all round improvement from the team. An improvement which seemed to start with and generated by the return of Mitchell, who took complete control of the City midfieldhe was back defending and up front attacking,
The closest that anyone came to scoring in the first half was when Harvey almost put through his own net and Barnett had to concede a corner, City had their share of the game and were playing some good possession football. The second half was much the same although Shrewsbury had three good scoring chances before they did get the winnning goal in the 58th minute Taylor's shot was pushed onto the post by Barnett but it rebounded into the net,
Always it was a hard game, with City coming even more into it, but still not making a real clean final break and sometimes being just a little slow to give that last pass that could have opened up the Shrewsbury defence, Welsh, Carter, Curtis and Rees all had slight chances but all too hurried enough to beat Boswell, City could do with a little more power up front and still a small extra safety margin of safety in defence.
Shrewsbury:- Boswell; Wright, Turner; Hemsley, Dolby, Brodie; Meredith, Ross, Clarke, Middleton, Taylor.
Exeter City: Barnett; Fulton, MacDonald; Mitchell, Harvey,Anderson; Welsh, Curtis, Carter, Hancock, Rees.
