(Hancock, Curtis 2)
BRADFORD CITY 5
(Price 2, Hellawell 3)

Wednesday September 23rd at St James's Park.

Exeter City:- Shearing; Smyth, Fulton; Rutley, Harvey, Hancock; Rees, Carter, Banks, Curtis, Ley.

Bradford City:- Fisher; Kelly, Ellam; Atkinson, Blacker, Stowell; Hall, Price, Hellawell, Roden, Thorpe.

Referee:- Mr G. Davis of Romford.
Linesmen:- Messrs W.Drummond and E.Garfield.

After beating Gillingham in the first round of the Football League Cup Exeter City were themselves beaten, by Bradford City, in the second round, with both games having been played at St. James's Park. Apart from Ley the Exeter forwards did not play well, despite the scoring of three goals, all in the second half. They missed far too many chances in the first half, when they outplayed Bradford City without doing any damage.

There were weaknesses all through the City side, and it is likely that after this defeat Exeter will revert to their 4-2-4 system which the players understand and which has brought them so much success in the past. Here is the time-table of goals:

  • Price for Bradford 21 minutes,
  • Hancock for Exeter 50 minutes,
  • Price for Bradford 66 minutes,
  • Hellawell for Bradford 67 minutes
  • Curtis for Exeter 73 minutes,
  • Hellawell for Bradford 76 minutes,
  • Curtis for Exeter 80 minutes,
  • Hellawell for Bradford 88 minutes.
As can be seen from the goalscoring chart Exeter tried to strike back but were floored by a Bradford counter-move each time.
