Match 11
26th September 1964,
Port Vale (Away )

Western League
Welton Rovers (Home)

PORT VALE 0
EXETER CITY (Banks) 1

Saturday September 26th at Port Vale, Burslem.

Port Vale:- Hancock; Alcock, Sproson; Steele, Nicholson, Miles; Rowland, Poole, Andrew, Cheesebrough, Smith.

Exeter City:- Shearing; Smyth, Hancock; Mitchell, Harvey, Anderson; Welsh, Banks, Curtis, Grace, Ley.

Referee:- Mr J.Catlin of Rochdale.

The City's game at Port Vale was an inspiring one, but it was a good chance for the team to settle back into its 4-2-4 formation, against a home side that was none too steady. Exeter settled well, showing more command and control than at any time this season since the Peterborough game, and everyone did his job well. Grace came back as if he had never been out of the side, Hancock had no trouble in converting to full-back, and Ley proved himself fit to be the regular left winger as long as he keeps up this sort of form. Alan Banks's goal in the second half was one to remember. Receiving from Curtis on the half-way line he ran on and on, beating both backs for speed, and finally rounding Hancock as he dashed out, to slip the ball into the unguarded goal.
