Match 12
September 28th 1964
Oldham Athletic (Away)
OLDHAM ATHLETIC 2
(Hancock own goal, Colquhoun)
EXETER CITY 0
Monday September 28th at Oldham.
Oldham Athletic:- Swan; Cameron, Martin; Frizzell, Williams, McColl; Ledger, Johnstone, Colquhoun, Craig, Bartley.
Exeter City:- Shearing; Smyth, Hancock; Mitchell, Harvey, Anderson; Welsh, Banks, Curtis, Grace, Ley.
Although there were only two goals in it this was not just another defeat, it was a disaster. Any promise that the City had shown at Port Vale was shattered. It was by far Exeter's worst display of the season. Oldham's Bobby Johnstone was an international and a great player in his prime. But at 34 years of age he has neither the speed nor the stamina of old. Yet he was allowed to walk into wide open spaces that the City men couldn't even find by running. And that was typical of the whole game. The City just couldn't get a grip on anything and Oldham made them look silly. Shearing made two or three very fine saves. Oldham had about the same number of very bad misses, otherwise the score would have been up around the half-dozen mark. And quite rightly so. But when the City did attack, and that was not very often, they never looked remotely like scoring until late in the second half, when Mitchell moved up and dipped one shot just over the bar and another just wide. Exeter were a bit unlucky in the seventh minute when Hancock put a cross from Bartley into his own net, but when Colquhoun shortly after the interval latched on to the ball and blasted it into the City's net it was all over. And the Lancastrians looked more like World Cup winners than the bottom team in the Third Division.
