Wednesday October 14th at St James's Park.

Exeter City:- Shearing; Smyth, Carter; Mitchell, Harvey, Anderson; Welsh, Banks, Curtis, Hancock, Rees.

Referee:- Mr E.D.Wallace of Swindon.

Linesmen:- Messrs C.H.Nicholls and C.H.Bond.

After all the fuss over the floodlights (Brentford claimed that they were not up to standard) this game could have been a bit of an anti climax. But it was not. A "value-for-money" City team got over the bad start they made, and quite well deserved their point from the star-studded top of the table London side.

At first it looked as if Brentford's men were going to outweigh the Grecians as heavily in performance as they did in price. In defence they tackled first-time and very hard. In attack they moved rapidly, found space, and hit the ball quickly and cleanly in a series of bewildering passing movements that had the City staggering. In all they were eleven defenders and eleven attackers. Defenders backing up and forwards chasing. In short Brentford's play was the classic example of what Exeter have been trying to do all through the season.

But somehow the City rose to the occasion and kept them out, and then generally worked their way back into the game. This drawn game still gives Exeter City the average of one point per match, and as they are not likely to meet any better sides than Brentford they will not be outclassed in the 3rd Division.
