Match 17
October 17th 1964,
Barnsley (home)
Western League,
Minehead (away)
EXETER CITY 3
(Rees, Harvey penalty, Curtis)
BARNSLEY 0
Saturday October 17th at St James's Park.
Exeter City:- Shearing; Smyth, Patrick; Mitchell, Harvey, Anderson; Rees, Banks, Curtis, Hancock, Ley.
Barnsley:- Wilcox; Murphy, Brookes; Wood, Swallow, Cunningham; Callaghan, Kerr, Leighton, Byrne, O'Hara.
Barnsley, without an away win this season, had a reserve goalkeeper, Tony Wilcox, who was making his League debut. There was a lot of action in this game, most of it in Barnsley's half if not in their penalty area. But although they got three goals the City should have had half a dozen at least, and their lack of shooting power was shown up very badly. Barnsley were a poor side, and the City have never been so much on top in any other game this season. Although Wilcox, playing his first match, made some quite amazing saves this does not excuse Hancock, in particular, of the Exeter forwards, who shot wide or too high at least four times with the goal at his mercy.
MINEHEAD 5
(Braddon, Claussen 4)
EXETER CITY RESERVES 2
(Stuckey 2)
At Minehead.
Minehead: Holehouse; May, Rideout;
Willetts, Madge, Davis; Smith, Claussen, Braddon, F.Jacobs, C.Jacobs.
City Reserves:- Barnett; Pope, Arbury; Edmunds, Higgins, Rutley; Stuckey, Redwood, Riding, Grace, Hurst.
A good demonstration of shooting power was given at Minehead where Claussen got four of the home side's goals against the Reserves.
