Match 18
October 20th. 1964
Brentford (away)

Wednesday 21st October
Western League
Dorchester Town (h)

BRENTFORD 2
(Lazarus, Bloomfield)

EXETER CITY 1
(Mitchell)

At Brentford, Tuesday, October 20th.

Brentford: Brodie; Hawley, Thomson; Scott, Gelson, Higginson; Lazarus, Bloomfield, Bonson, Cobb, Fielding.

Exeter City:- Shearing; Smyth, Patrick; Mitchell, Harvey, Anderson; Rutley, Banks, Redwood, Hancock, Rees.

The "under £10,000" Exeter City side might have felt like a bunch of "Cinderellas" as they lined up against £100,000 Brentford, at Griffin Park, before a crowd of over 12,000. But they fought like "Jack the Giantkiller" and almost brought off the same result. Brentford deserved their 2-1 win. No one can argue with that. But the City, hit by injuries as they are, and disrupted again at the last minute by George Ley's sickness, gave more actual value fo money. In some of their play Brentford were brilliant. The City, unable to allow themselves the luxury of a special burst and then a bit of a breather, had to go at the same grinding pace all the time. With Ley unfit Peter Rutley came in at number seven. But this was only a number on the team-sheet and in the locally born teenager dropped back as an extra defender as well, and really proved his ability as a senior player in his first Third Division game.
