Saturday October 31st at St James's Park.

EXETER CITY 0
WALSALL 1 (O'Neill)

Exeter City:- Shearing; Smyth, Patrick; Mitchell, Harvey, Anderson; Welsh, Curtis, Carter, Hancock, Rees.

Walsall:- Carling; Roper, Gregg; Bennett, T.Smith, Atthey; R.Smith, Meek, O'Neill, Clarke, Harrison.

Referee:- Mr H.G.New of Havant. Linesmen:- Messrs W.Summerhayes and B.T.Wickham.

The big attraction at St James's Park was the appearance of Trevor Smith, the former English international centre half, transferred from Birmingham to Walsall in time for him to make his debut for the "Saddlers" against Exeter City. The fee paid was £17,000. Smith, well over six feet tall, was matched in size only by O'Neill, whose first trip into the City half ended in a feeble shot, half blocked by Harvey and then picked up by Shearing. But O'Neill did score the goal which gave the visitors the points, a shot into the roof of the City net five minutes after the interval.

Walsall deserved this, their first away win of the season, because the City were so poor. Exeter did not wake up until after Walsall had scored, and then it was too late for them to do anything with the very limited power of their attack.

At Taunton.

Exeter began with a flourish but Taunton weathered the storm and later came into the picture themselves. Exeter almost took the lead in the first few seconds, through inside-right Redwood. In the closing minutes a defensive error almost gave Taunton the lead, Exeter goalkeeper Barnett making a daring dive to save the situation.

Taunton United:- Stone; Court, Parsons; Battishall, Deplidge, Harrison; Hall, Payne, Watts, Murray, Stafford.

City Reserves:- Barnett; Pope, MacDonald;
Edmunds, Higgins, Fulton; Stuckey, Redwood, Riding, Grace, Ley.
