Exeter City started this afternoon's first round Cup-tie determined to take seriously the threat from the Athenian Leaguers, Hayes. They had a special week's training, and knowing that Hayes had seen them play three times had a special surprise for the amateurs. The surprise was a change of formation from four two four to all out attack.
It worked insofar as it made scores of chances, but even allowing for some brilliant saves by Davison far too many were missed. Hayes, almost entirely on the defensive, should have been thrashed, but instead they could have snatched the game away. The majority of Exeter's best chances came from Welsh, who played a great game on the right wing.
Exeter's goal came as early as the ninth minute. Curtis had dashed in and prodded the ball over the bar from a centre by Rees. Davison put the goal-kick straight to Ley, and the young Exminster born player banged the ball straight back into the net. The City, with all those missed chances, thus had to hold that slender lead till the end.
- Exeter City Reserves beat Barnstaple at Mill-road by three goals (Stuckey, Riding, Redwood) to one (Sanders).
