It was not their side's four-one win over Exeter City that made the biggest impression on the Arsenal's directors; it was not the new £8,000 St James's Park floodlighting system which was opened for this special game, but it was the support which came from the men on the terraces.
The biggest crowd of the season, 11,507, turned up for this game and the Arsenal considered that the City supporters deserved a lot of praise for the way in which they rallied round. But they were probably being modest, for the hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of all-star playing talent that the Arsenal put into the field was enough to attract anyone.
The new floodlights were a vast improvement on the ones which have stood at St James's Park for about ten years now, and as brilliant as the exhibition that was waited for and hoped for by an Arsenal side that included seven internationals. Baker, McLintock, Howe, and Eastham, these names are legendary in football today, and the holders of those names did not disappoint the crowd. Neither did Exeter City, who played the sort of soccer that would get them a long way in the Third Division.
The guest of honour was Cliff Bastin, who is now a publican in Heavitree.
