It looked like a day for mistakes with a greasy pitch and a slippery ball when Exeter City met Shrewsbury in the second round of the Cup competition at St James's Park before 6,500 spectators.
But Shrewsbury did not make any as the City forced in their first attacks down the right wing, Turner clearing his lines in style. Possibly absorbing one or two lessons they may have learned from the mid-week visit of the Arsenal, the City started this game very well, with their defence in control and their forwards moving smartly. But despite the improved standard of their play they still couldn't make a route to goal, while Shrewsbury, from their first four real attempts scored twice. The City had seventy per-cent of the play at least, but they had not the guile, speed, or strength required to break down the spoiling tactics and solid defence of Shrewsbury very often, and when they did the finish was lacking.
- The 20 years old part-time player Alan Riding, who has already made his goalscoring reputation in the City Reserves, made his debut in Exeter's first team, and did not look out of place at all.
- At Bath the City Reserves beat Bath City by two goals (Redwood and Rutley) to one (Lock). Fulton missed a penalty in the second half.
