Exeter City gave their fans the best Christmas present they could wish for, a devastating 4-1 win over the League leaders, Grimsby Town. During a first half "purple patch" goals came from Anderson in 28 minutes, Thorne (31), Banks (42) and Curtis (43). It was not until the game was nearly over that Grimsby scored, Tees heading a centre from Hill past Shearing with eight minutes to go. It was a very good team performance on the part of Exeter City with Curtis having one of his best games of the season and the defence standing up well to the strong Grimsby side. But the improvement really hinged on the inspiration and non-stop endeavour provided by Alan Banks, and this game proved how badly he has been missed.
