Match 30
January 2nd 1965
Mansfield Town (away)
Western League,
Bridgwater (home)
MANSFIELD TOWN 2 (Middleton 2)
EXETER CITY 1 (Rees)
Saturday January 2nd 1965
at Mansfield.
Mansfield Town:- Treharne; Jones, Toon; Hall, Gill, Morris; Gregson, Middleton, Chapman, Tyrer, Scanlon.
Exeter City:- Shearing; Smyth, MacDonald; Mitchell, Harvey, Anderson;
Rees, Banks, Curtis, Carter, Thorne.
Referee:- Mr P.Cowan of Manchester.
When the City team arrived at the Northern ground they found the pitch completely frozen and in most people's opinion unsafe for the players. The surface was bone hard and slippery and nearly all the field was covered in ice. But the referee decided it would be playable after several barrow loads of sand had been spread along the worst side of the pitch. It is impossible to estimate form or criticise in any way in this sort of game, and the only thing which can be said is that both sides tried to put on the best possible entertainment and with the minimum of shirking.
