Match 36

Colchester United (a)
Western League,
Bideford (h)
COLCHESTER UNITED 1( Langley) EXETER CITY 1 (Curtis)
Saturday February 13th 1965
at Colchester. Colchester United:- Ames; Forbes, Fowler; Jones, Loughton, Docherty; Grice, Langley, Trevis, Salisbury, Aitchison.
Exeter City:- Shearing; Smyth, Patrick; Mitchell, Harvey, Anderson; Welsh, Carter, Curtis, Hancock, Thorne.
Referee:- Mr W.Clements of West Bromwich.
Exeter City gained another valuable point at Colchester, but the play was indicative of the lowly League positions of both teams. Exeter showed little of the inspired moves which they can produce at times, and no doubt the enforced absence of Banks had something to do with this. The Colchester ground was in a treacherous condition, almost ankle deep in mud and with grass only showing in each corner. This, and the hustling style of the home team allowed the City only an odd flash of the form they showed at Bristol and in the first half of the Port Vale match.

The Bideford team at St James's Park included three former Exeter City players, Marsh, Bond, and Bennett, and it was the last-named of these who scored a goal for the Robins in the first minute.
