Match 37

Western League,
Yeovil (a)
EXETER CITY 1 (Welsh)
SOUTHEND UNITED 1 (Smillie)
Saturday February 20th 1965 at St James's Park.
Exeter City: Shearing; Smyth, Patrick; Mitchell, Harvey, Anderson; Welsh, Carter, Curtis, Hancock, Thorne.
Southend United:- McKechnie; Costello, Kneale; Bentley, Watson, Bradbury; Slater, Smillie, Bullock, Gilfillan, McKinven.
Referee:- Mr E.D.Wallace of Swindon. Linesmen: Messrs C.H.Nicholls and K.C.Hanham.
This was a rather scrappy game in which good moves and goalmouth incidents were few. The midfield play was badly constructed, and neither side came out
of the game with much credit. The City never got a grip on things, and Thorne, who had been their potential danger man early on, was unaccountably starved of the ball in the second half.
Southend took the lead in the 58th minute through Smillie, and one minute later a lobbed centre from Eric Welsh sailed into the net as Thorne and Curtis ran in, and this saved a point for Exeter City.
