Exeter City, who were scheduled to play Bournemouth at St James's Park last Wednesday, could not beat the weather at all. The fears that the game would have to be cancelled because of the snow and frost faded out, only for the event to be called off at 6.45 p.m., forty-five minutes before the time of the kick-off, because the ice and snow had thawed but left the pitch flooded.
And Bournemouth, who had had to struggle to get through the snow bound roads in their team coach, found that the game was off by the time that they arrived more than an hour late, at 7 o'clock. By the time that the game would normally have started they piled straight back into their coach to start the homeward journey. And they only got as far as Bridport before being stranded there for the night!
With the gradual improvement in the weather Exeter City were able to get their pitch in good enough condition for play to proceed in today's match against Bristol City, but the Reserves' match in the Western League at Frome could not be played, owing to floods. A goal in the 55th minute gave Bristol City the victory and showed why they are chasing promotion while Exeter sit near the bottom of the League. With little to choose between the teams, Bristol scored that vital goal while Exeter lacked the finishing touch.
