Match 42
March 20th 1965, Watford (h)

Western League,
Glastonbury (a)

EXETER CITY 1 (Welsh) .
WATFORD

Saturday March 20th 1965 at St James's Park.

Exeter City:- Shearing; Smyth, Patrick; Mitchell, Harvey, Anderson; Welsh, Rees, Curtis, Grace, Thorne.

Watford:- Cowen; Furphy, Jones; Welbourne, Mancini, Houghton; Owen, McAnearney, Saunders, Anderson, Harris.

Referee:- Mr D.W.Smith of Stonehouse.
Linesmen:- Messrs W.Drummond and M. Washer.

This was Exeter City's first win since February 6th when they beat Port Vale at St James's Park. Again it was only a single goal victory, but at the same time the attack was very much improved. They had more life and put in more shots and headers than in several previous games put together. And in putting aside their 4-2-4 formation in favour of an all out attacking policy the City did not seem to have sacrificed any of the solidarity in defence.

Exeter's goal was scored by Welsh, their outstanding forward, in the 72nd minute. Exeter were still trying to break out and score right till the end, and in the closing minutes Cowen had to hold a shot from Grace and a header from Curtis.
