Match 46
April 3rd 1965,
Hull City (home)
Western League
Weston Super Mare (away)
EXETER CITY 0
HULL CITY 2 (McSeveney, Wagstaff)
Saturday April 3rd 1965 at St James's Park.
Exeter City:- Shearing; Smyth, Patrick; Mitchell, Harvey, Fulton; Welsh, Rees, Carter, Hancock, Ley.
Hull City:- Williams; Davidson, D.Butler; Collinson, Milner, Summers; McSeveney, Wagstaff, Chilton, Houghton, I.Butler.
Referee:- Mr D.J. Lyden of Birmingham. Linesmen:- Messrs W.J.Mardon and D.Grey.
High priced Hull were too much for the City at St James's Park, and won the game fairly easily with goals in the 30th and 38th minutes. Hull City, who are second to Carlisle in the League but who have a better goalscoring record, included their three £40,000 forwards, Wagstaff, who made his debut for them against Exeter in November, and the left-wing pair Ken Houghton and Ian Butler, who came from Rotherham United in January. There is no doubt that the better side won. The City defence did well to hold the high-scoring Hull team to two goals, but their poor distribution from clearances did not help the forwards.
