EXETER CITY 0
BRISTOL ROVERS 1 (Jarman)

Easter Monday April 19th 1965 at St James's Park.

Exeter City:- Shearing; Smyth, Patrick; Mitchell, Harvey, Fulton; Welsh, Carter, Curtis, Anderson, Rees.

Bristol Rovers:- Hall; Frowen, Jones; Oldfield, Stone, Mabbutt; Jarman, Brown, Biggs, Munro, Haverty.

Referee:- Mr W.J.Gow of Birmingham.

Linesmen:- Messrs H.V.Gisborne and D.Milverton.

The return "West-country Derby" dragged itself out into a hopeless and despairing finish for the St James's Park faithful after action and excitement had featured the first twenty minutes. Why did the City fail after such a good show at Bristol on Friday? The answer is a combination of three things, bad finishing by the forwards, bad luck also by them, and a much improved performance by a much changed Bristol line-up. The bad finishing was evident often in this erratic game of jerky attacks which swirled from one end of the pitch to the other, as quickly and unpredictably as the gale-force wind which whipped around the ground. The bad luck was around almost as often. Curtis, Welsh, and Carter all put in goalworthy shots that flew just wide or too high, or were deflected by defenders who didn't know what had hit them. Anderson pulled a groin muscle just before half time and had to spend the second half on the left wing.

The Rovers looked the more complete side. They proved it with the great 44th minute shot by Jarman that gave them the winning goal, and in the way they countered every thrust by the City after the interval.
