Match 04
August 31st 1977
League Cup 2nd Round
Aston Villa (home)
CITY LOSE BUT THEY WIN THE RESPECT OF THE CUP-HOLDERS
Wednesday August 31st 1977.
St James's Park, Attendance 13,768.
EXETER CITY 1 ASTON VILLA 3.
Exeter City may be out of the Football League Cup competition, but they can certainly hold their heads high and feel proud. The City put up a wonderful fight in front of their biggest crowd for nearly ten years.
It was not until the last minute of the match, when Andy Gray scored his third goal, that the Villa made absolutely sure of going through to the next round.
There was only one goal in it at half-time, Gray having scored in the 22nd minute. When Gray scored again in the 58th minute all seemed lost for Exeter City. But this goal and the arrival of the substitute, Robertson, in place of Weeks, sparked off a rousing climax by the City. Within five minutes Robertson scored and Exeter were back in the game with a chance, and from then on the famous Midlanders had to soak up a huge amount of pressure before they finally clinched the result with that late goal.
Exeter City:- Baugh; Templeman and Hore; Weeks, Saxton, and Hatch; Hodge, Kellow, Bowker, Beer, and Jennings.
Aston Villa:- Rimmer; Gregory and Smith; Phillips, McNaught, and Mortimer; Deehan, Little, Gray, Cropley, and Carrodus.
Referee:- Mr D.Nippard, of Bournemouth.
