No Fire Power as City Slip Again

Carlisle Win At St. James's Park

Monday September 26th 1977.

St James's Park, attendance 5,000.

EXETER CITY 0 CARLISLE UNITED 1.

Exeter are missing Alan Beer, or rather, the goalscoring of their Welsh "striker." Their defeat by Carlisle United at St James's Park means that the City have now scored only once in their last four games from which they have taken only one point, and they have taken only three points from four home fixtures.

These home results mean that Exeter have failed to capitalise on the good away returns, five points from four games, and once again, in the match against Carlisle the City simply failed to take any of the numerous chances which came their way.

They lacked the power and "killer" punch in front of goal. Although Carlisle were not as defensive as Portsmouth but they showed plenty of experience when under pressure and never lost their concentration on the job in hand.

Exeter continued throughout the match to push forward but failed to turn their supremacy into goals, and then came the deciding goal at the other end, scored by Rafferty, the old Argyle forward, fifteen minutes from time.

Exeter City: Key; Templeman and Hore; Bowker, Saxton, and Hatch; Hodge, Kellow, Randell, Holman, and Jennings.

Carlisle United:- Swinburne; Hoolickin and McCartney; Carr, MacDonald, and Parker; McVitie, Ludlam, Tait, Rafferty, and Lathan
