City Defence Triumphs
In A Tense Struggle At Chesterfield
Saturday October 1st 1977.
Recreation Ground, Chesterfield, attendance 3,771.
Chesterfield 0 Exeter City 0.
Shaking off two successive home defeats Exeter City hit back on the cold, windy, and sometimes wet Chesterfield ground this afternoon to achieve another good "away" result.
In fact only a miraculous save by the Chesterfield goalkeeper stopped Hatch from putting the City ahead midway through the second half. Torrential rain gave way to sunshine as Exeter mounted a fast attack on their right, which ended when Roberts drove wide of the post from Kellow's pass. After fifteen minutes Hodge scored for the City but the goal did not count as the Exeter man had fouled the goalkeeper.
Playing against the swirling wind and rain in the second half, the City defence came under increasing pressure, but stuck to their task with determination and courage. Saxton, Key, and Hatch were Exeter's heroes in this period.
Chesterfield:- Ogrizovic; Tartt and Burton; Kowalski, Cottam, and O'Neill; Jones, Dearden, Green, Parker, and Heppolette.
Exeter City:- Key; Templeman and Hore; Bowker, Saxton, and Hatch; Hodge, Kellow, Randell, Roberts, and Jennings.
Referee: Mr A.J.Hamil of Wolverhampton.
Exeter Reserves v Welton Rovers
Exeter City Reserves beat Welton Rovers 1-0 at St James's Park.
Against Welton Rovers we had on parade our new signings, forwards Bob Jackson and Fred Ingham, and defender Kevin Skinner, from Plymouth Argyle. Kevin had an outstanding game and is proving a very skilful young fullback. The team played well in patches but the improvement we are looking for is beginning to come! It was our first victory of the season and I hope we will build from there. I am sure we will! Come along and see.
Our team against WELTON ROVERS in the Western League was:
John Baugh, Tony Mitchell, Keith Ford, Phil Hartnell, Kevin Skinner, Paul Smythe, Dick Forbes (Capt.), Harry Holman, Roy Ireland, Bob Jackson, Fred Ingham. Sub: Steve Kelly. Scorer: Jackson.
South West and Wales Youth League
Bath City (h)
On The Youth Scene.
Our last youth game saw us defeat Bath City by 3 goals to 2 at St James Park. It was a good win against a big and very 'robust' team although it was not the most impressive of performances skillwise. Outstanding for the City were defenders Kevin Skinner and Trafford Tasker and midfield player Peter Howarth who was in impressive form. The latest capture on the youth front is that of a local lad Paul Clatworthy, 14-year-old player with Exeter Schools who has been signed on schoolboy forms in the face of opposition from several other league clubs. Good luck, Paul!
The side which represented the club against Bath City in the South West and Wales Youth League was:
Phil Howe, Steve Baxter, Trafford Tasker, Steve Kelly, Kevin Skinner, Paul Smythe, Peter Howarth, Andy Rowden, Phil Kellow, Roy Ireland, Mel Pym. Subs: Mike Mathias, Steve Harrower.
Scorers: Ireland and Kellow (2).
The Kellow touch again, well done young Phil!
