A Last Minute Goal Beats City and It Was scored By One of Their Old Players

Saturday October 8th 1977.

St James's Park, attendance 4,622.

EXETER CITY 0-1 WREXHAM.

Dixie McNeil, put out by Exeter City on a free transfer a few years ago despite being the club's leading goalscorer, returned to his old ground this afternoon to destroy his former club with a last-minute goal that brought more agony to the City.

McNeil, who went from Exeter in 1967 to Corby, then to Northampton and Lincoln City, joined Wrexham from the "Imps" a fortnight ago for a fee of £60,000. And today, back at St James's Park, he struck in his well remembered devastating style with a sharp header following a free kick. The ball eluded the clutching hands of Key and settled in the back of Exeter's net. There was barely time to restart the game when the 90 minutes was up.

And in that one move Exeter were again taught a lesson in the art of finishing off their moves.

Exeter City:- Key; Templeman and Hore; Bowker, Saxton, and Hatch; Hodge, Kellow, Randell, Roberts, and Jennings.

Wrexham: Davies; Evans and Dwyer; Davis, Roberts, and Whittle; Shinton, Sutton, McNeil, Cartwright, and Griffiths.

Referee: Mr E.A. Read of Bristol.

Exeter City have now gone seven games without a victory, and in that period the three at home have all been lost.
