Division Three

Exeter City 2 Sheffield Wednesday 1

Attendance: 4,564

There could not have been a more dramatic finish to the game with Exeter City scoring the winning goal in the very last seconds. The referee signalled the goal and then blew the final whistle, as the Grecians finally broke their disappointing run of league form and breathed a sigh of relief big enough to have shaken the St James' Park foundations.

It was a game of fast, furious action and full of excitementThe first half was played at an electrifying pace with plenty of incident in both goalmouths. Wednesday were a tough and big side, but they did not play the defensive football expected from them. It was such a vital win for City who began with Harry Holman missing the target early onand then having a Nicky Jennings overhead kick cleared off the line.

Wednesday took the lead in the 21st minute. Richard Key produced a brilliant saveJennings hooked the ball clear, but it hit Tynan and rebounded into the net. Exeter hit back within a minute to equaliseA cross from Tony Kellow hit the bar and Jennings headed home the rebound. Not surprisingly the pace was not as strong in the second halfbut Exeter kept their patience. With the seconds fast ticking away and draw seemingly the resultCity won a corner and from John Hore's kickKellow chipped the ball back into the middle for Holman to score with a header.
