A Gift from Lincoln
THEN EXETER RUB IT IN
LINCOLN CITY 1 EXETER CITY 2.
Saturday October 15th 1977.
Sincil Bank, Lincoln, attendance 4,804.
Exeter City have at last laid that Sincil Bank bogey. After years of poor results at Lincoln, they struck back this afternoon with goals from Randell and Kellow to follow up their midweek home victory. After Exeter had taken an early lead they came under pressure for the rest of the first half and were far from their best in this period. But they struck back well after the change of ends when Kellow showed all his coolness to get the winner in the 56th minute. A surprise visitor to the Exeter team's dressing room before the game was Mr John Newman, their former manager and player, who is now the manager of Grimsby Town. He had the afternoon "off" as his present team had played their League match (v Barnsley) last night.
Lincoln City:- Grotier; Neale and Leigh; Booth, Wigginton, and Crombie; Hubbard, Fleming, Graham, D. Smith, and Harding.
Exeter City:- Key; Hore and Roberts; Bowker, Saxton, and Hatch; Hodge, Kellow, Randell, Holman, and Jennings.
The City went ahead after only four minutes and their goal can only be described as a "gift." Randell receiving from Bowker shot weakly from 25 yards and Grotier let the ball slip through his hands and drop over the line. Exeter City Reserves beat Frome at St James's Park by a goal to nil.
