A Late Assault
City Within Eight Minutes Of A Draw
Saturday November 12th 1977.
Priestfield Road, Gillingham,
Attendance 6,000.
GILLINGHAM 1 EXETER CITY 0.
Exeter City were within eight minutes of getting at least a draw on the wind and rain swept Gillingham ground this afternoon.
In a game that was often dictated by the conditions the City looked like coming away with a point until conceding that late goal, scored by Price with a well directed header into the top of the net. It was the sequel to a corner, which was needlessly conceded by Saxton, who had ample time to keep the ball in play.
Gillingham:- Hillyard; Knight and Burrows; Overton, Shipperly, and Crabbe; Nicholl, Hunt, Price, Westwood, and Richardson.
Exeter City: Key; Templeman and Hore; Bowker, Saxton, and Hatch; Hodge, Kellow, Randell, Holman, and Jennings.
Referee: Mr B.Hill of Wellingborough.
Gillingham kicked off against a strong wind and should have taken an early lead when Price went through unchallenged following a badly timed attempt to tackle by Saxton, but Key came out and grabbed the ball before the Gillingham player could get a shot in.
With heavy squalls of rain lashing the ground in the second half the City had a stiff fight on their hands, but held out until that late goal, described above.
