Penalty Decides
Hodge Steps In With Victory Spot Kick

Saturday November 19th 1977.

St James's Park, attendance 4,746.

EXETER CITY 1 BRADFORD CITY 0.

The football in the first half of this match was little short of pathetic. Exeter stepped up their game a little after the interval, but all in all this was a very poor match from which the Grecians must have been relieved to salvage both points.

With too many passes going astray and with too much aimless kicking the match appeared to be approaching a deadlock, when with just over twenty minutes to play the City were awarded a penalty. From Kellow's pass Hodge advanced towards the bye-line, and when a yard or so inside the penalty area he was felled by Middleton. The referee immediately whistled and pointed to the penalty spot, though the decision appeared somewhat harsh with the Bradford City goal in no danger. Hodge stepped up to take the spot kick low to the left of the goalkeeper, the ball was in the net, and the City had won
