Thrilling Cup Win

Newport Vanquished At St James's Park

Wednesday November 30th 1977.

St James's Park, attendance 5,713.

Exeter City 4 Newport County 2.

In a thrilling, exciting, and outstanding 90 minutes on Wednesday under the St James's Park floodlights Exeter City beat Newport in their Cup replay to go into the second round for the first time since 1971.

They are now away to Minehead, and the City must fancy their chances of going forward further in the competition.

The Exeter team showed two changes from that which played in the game at Newport on Saturday, Weeks and Roberts replacing Hodge (injured) and Holman (dropped). Newport's only change was at inside left where Vaughan was preferred to Byrne.

The crowd of nearly six thousand certainly had full value for their money in a cracking cup-tie in which Exeter came from behind to win a brilliant victory. They were 2-1 down at half-time but struck back in devastating style in the second half with three goals in twenty minutes.

Roberts opened the scoring for Exeter in the twelfth minute, but the visitors hit back with two goals, by Clark and Goddard, in a hectic six minute spell of all out attacking play.

Exeter's goals in the second half were obtained by Hatch, Kellow, and Templeman, but they should have had five goals, for Kellow after 79 minutes was brought down in the penalty area and Bowker's shot from the spot was saved by Plumley.
