Kellow's Two Penalties
But Cambridge Cash In On Defensive Deficiencies
Saturday December 3rd 1977.
St James's Park, attendance 5,000.
EXETER CITY 2 CAMBRIDGE UNITED 4.
Gary Heale, a 21 year-old centre-forward or outside-left, who has played several games for Luton Town this season and last, has signed for Exeter City on a month's loan, and he was included in the team to meet Cambridge at St James's Park this afternoon.
With a much-changed team Exeter City slumped to their worst defeat at St James's Park for a long time this afternoon. Cambridge, last year's Fourth Division champions, cashed in on the City's defensive deficiencies, but even so this was a bad performance by Exeter, who had to rely on two penalties by Kellow for their goals. It was a bitter disappointment for the crowd, who had seen the City win their previous five home matches including the midweek cup tie. Kellow's first penalty goal after Batson had handled was scored with a strong shot to the goalkeeper's right, and his second, with Exeter 4-1 down was an equally explosive shot which Hansbury could not even have seen as the ball thundered into the top of the net.
