Key is Exeter's Hero
Defences Well On Top At Oxford

Saturday December 31st 1977.

Manor Ground, Headington, attendance 4,698.
OXFORD UNITED 0 EXETER CITY 0.

Richard Key was the City's hero at Oxford this afternoon, making at least three outstanding saves from Foley in addition to plenty of others of a more normal level of competence, and altogether playing well enough in a sound defensive line-up to frustrate a team which is unbeaten on their own ground since last August, when Rotherham beat them by 3 goals to 2. Unfortunately for the City, Key's opposite number, John Milkins, the 34 years-old ex-Portsmouth veteran, was equally up to the occasion, and he twice stopped Kellow from scoring with two brilliant saves in
the second half. Generally the two defences dominated the proceedings in a hard fought
game between evenly matched sides. Jim Giles was in particularly good form at centre half on his return to the Exeter team.

Oxford United:- Milkins; Fogg and Drysdale;
Bodel, Stott, and Jeffrey, McGrogan, Taylor, Foley, Seacole, and Duncan.

Exeter City:- Key; Templeman and Hore;
Weeks, Giles, and Hatch; Randell, Kellow, Bowker, Roberts, and Holman.

  • Bob Jackson, the reserve team centre-forward, has been transferred to Weston-super-Mare, the Western League club.
