Ingham is a Sensation
He Scores The Equalising Goal On His Debut

Monday January 2nd 1978.

St James's Park, attendance 6,193.

EXETER CITY 1 CHESTER 1.

From time to time in football sensational debuts are made by players previously unheard of. They will get an unexpected chance on account of perhaps a sudden emergency, or the absence through injury, of a well-established first-teamer, and will seize their opportunity with both hands, by playing a "blinder" or scoring an important goal. Fred Ingham, a 24 years old centre-forward formerly of Falmouth Town and Dawlish, made just such a debut this afternoon for the City first-eleven against Chester, at St James's Park. He had played well enough during the first hour of the game, but not with particular distinction, and the City were trailing 0-1 to a goal scored by Crossley for the visitors in the 2lst minute. Then, precisely at 4 o'clock, came the City's equaliser. Following a long throw-in by Hatch the ball was flicked on by Bowker. The Chester defence failed to clear, and Ingham, moving forward from the left, did not ask any questions as he thumped home a vicious left footed shot which nearly shattered the net. It was a brilliant goal of the "Tony
Kellow brand."
