Port Vale (Away)
Weather It's Football
Saturday Matches Postponed Till Wednesday
The week-end weather, which was a mixture of sleet, snow, and ice was too much for football and outdoor sports, and many cancellations had to be made. Among the affected fixtures were Exeter City's at Port Vale, and the City Reserves' versus Bridgwater Town at St James's Park.
PORT VALE 4 EXETER CITY 0.
Played on Wednesday February 8th.
Exeter City crashed to a 4-0 defeat that they did not really deserve at Port Vale, but had only themselves
to blame. A disastrous mistake by Hatch on the icy pitch let Port Vale in for a stunning goal straight from the kick-off, and just as the City looked to be capable of salvaging at least a point, another defensive blunder, this time by Bowker, allowed Beamish to provide a chance for Sutcliffe, who made no mistake with a low shot into the net from ten yards.
Although two goals down soon after the start of the second half the City fought back well and Port Vale had two miraculous escapes, the first when Connaughton managed to punch out a hefty volleyed shot by Kellow, and the second when an equally good shot by Randell hammered against the angle of post and crossbar. The Vale's next goal was got by Froggatt, their new £10,000 forward from Colchester, and the last was a penalty against Hatch which Beamish netted.
