THE DEVON DERBY

Exeter City Hold the Upper Hand

Tuesday March 28th 1978.
St James's Park, attendance 8,334.

EXETER CITY 0-0 PLYMOUTH ARGYLE

After their costly mistakes at Hereford on Saturday it was important that Exeter City made an immediate recovery, and they did just that on Tuesday evening under the St James's Park floodlights. A crowd of well over eight thousand saw the City and Plymouth Argyle battle out a 0-0 draw, and this was a fair result of the Devon Derby as both sets of players fought so hard in the heavy going. With the usual matter of prestige at stake in the games between the Devonshire rivals neither side was prepared to give anything away. But the City still hold the upper hand against Plymouth, having not lost to the
Pilgrims in the last seven League and Cup games. Following a day of torrential rain the referee inspected the pitch three times before giving the match the go-ahead, and considering the deluge it took the playing conditions underfoot could have been much
worse.

Exeter City:- Key; Templeman and Hore; Delve, Giles, and Hodge; Kellow, Randell, Bowker, Holman, and Hatch.

Plymouth Argyle:- Barron; Horswill and Uzzell; Bason, Foster, and James; Megson, Taylor, Binney, Fear, and Irusson.

Referee:- Mr B.J. Homewood of Sunbury-on-Thames.

Linesmen:- Messrs M.K.Bevan and B.K.Champion.
