City Are Safe
Third Division Football Next Season Assured

Saturday April 22nd 1978.

St James's Park, attendance 3,853.
EXETER CITY 0 COLCHESTER UNITED 0.

The continuation of Third Division football at St James's Park next season was assured by the result of this match, a draw, which gave Exeter a total of 42 points with two games still left to play, and this total is beyond the reach of at least six of the clubs below them in the League table. At the same time, it was yet another disappointing display by Exeter City on their own ground following their goalless draw on Tuesday against Chesterfield. In fact, had Colchester been sharper in the opening 25 minutes they could well have made things difficult for the City, having missed two clear-cut chances, first when Allinson half-volleyed over the bar from an easy position, and the second when the same player muffed
another easy shot from close range and put the ball wide. After twelve minutes Exeter got the ball into the Colchester net following a good move, but it did not count because Delve, who put it in with a header from Ingham's centre, handled as well, and the
referee was right on the spot to disallow the effort.

Exeter City: - Key; Templeman and Hore;
Delve, Giles, and Bowker; Hodge, Kellow, Randell, Ingham, and Holman.
Colchester:- Walker; Cook and Williams;
Leslie, Packer, and Dowman; Foley, Gough, Dyer, Allinson, and Wignall.
