Second Promotion In Two Seasons

Saturday April 29th 1978.

Abbey Stadium, Cambridge, attendance 8,741.

CAMBRIDGE UNITED 2 EXETER CITY 1.

Club history was made by Cambridge United on their Abbey Road ground this afternoon, when in front of a crowd of nearly 9,000 they gained promotion to the Second Division just twelve months after winning the Fourth Division championship, by defeating Exeter City by 2 goals to one.

Nevertheless it was the City who scored the first goal of the game, twelve minutes after the interval, and it was Keith Bowker, who is a former Cambridge player, who scored it.

But the situation for them was retrieved in due course when Finney and Fallon got the goals which the big crowd was waiting to see, and the scenes of jubilation and excitement at the close were reminiscent of the ones at Exeter a year ago when the City won promotion, though this was already assured before the final home game, when Aldershot were the visitors.

Cambridge:- Webster; Howard, Buckley; Stringer, Fallon, Smith; Cozens, Spriggs, Sweetzer, Finney, and Biley.

Exeter City: Key; Templeman, Hore; Delve, Giles, Hatch; Forbes, Kellow, Randell, Bowker, and Ingham.

Exeter City Reserves v St Luke's College

There was no "fairy tale finale" for St Luke's College or for Exeter City's Nicky Jennings at St James's Park this afternoon. St Luke's, playing the final game in their 112 year history, and Jennings, who is bowing out of professional soccer after 15 years and 400 League appearances, must have been hoping to finish with a showpiece game. But it was not to be. It was dull and quite uninteresting and not a goal was scored by either side.
