Maidstone 2 Exeter 4

Loyal Maidstone punters who took the 10,000-1 FA Cup odds on offer against their side tore their tickets up six minutes into the second half. Two Exeter goals in those opening minutes of the second period meant an end to Maidstone's great run. But the spirit of the part-timers never flagged, even aftor Peter Rogers put the fourth and final goal through the legs of keeper Dickie Guy, who had conceded only two in ten previous goals in ties. Exeter hit their hosts hard as they tried to settle themselves for a second-half effort. Kellow, set free by Pearson, rammed his shot into the roof of the net. And though Woon quickly pulled one back added to his first half for Maidstone, Pullar goal to put Exeter com- fortably 3-1 ahead.

Then came the Rogers goal which left Guy blushing. But even at 4-1, the non-League side didn't call it a day. A great run by Daubney left Ovard the simple task of prod- ding home No. 2. Exeter manager Brian Godfrey said: Once we took the lead, I could never see us losing. But Maidstone made it hard for us."
