Liam Oakes, originally from Cornwall but later part of the football programme at Ivybridge Community College, signed for Exeter City as a scholar/trainee after finishing school in 2023 and made his first-team debut in August 2024.
Liam joined the club’s academy at the under-9 stage and, as an under-16 player, was already playing for the under-18s in the EFL Youth Alliance during 2022/23. Subsequently starting his scholarship in July 2023, he appeared against Crediton United in the Devon St Luke's Bowl in September 2023 and in both of the club's FA Youth Cup games during the 2023/24 season whilst also acting as an unused substitute for the EFL Trophy game against Reading in September 2023.

Moving into his second full-time season with the club, Liam appeared in first-team pre-season friendlies starting with the game against Tiverton Town on 9 July 2024 and - having caught the eye of manager Gary Caldwell - made his first-team debut as a 'starter' in the EFL Cup tie at Walsall on 13 August 2024. Later that week, he was an unused substitute for the league game at Northampton Town prior to making his home first-team debut against Swindon Town in the EFL Trophy on 3 September 2024 when he was named player of the match. Continuing to appear for the under-18s, Liam was part of the club's squad for FA Youth Cup and Premier League Cup games.
