Alfie Cunningham, a Welsh youth international, was an Exeter City scholar/trainee between 2022 and 2024 who, after appearing for Wales in the finals of the European under-17 championships, made his Grecians' first-team debut early in 2023/24 before being released.
Alfie was in the under-16 age group in 2021/22 but played much of the season in Exeter City's under-18 team in the EFL Youth Alliance. He was in the team that lost to Bideford on penalties in the final of the Devon St Luke’s Bowl in May 2022 having also made appearances in the FA Youth Cup.
Becoming a scholar in 2022 he made further Youth Alliance and FA Youth Cup appearances for the club. He also appeared for Wales under-17s in UEFA championship qualifiers in October 2022 having previously played for Wales under-16s when they jointly-won the 2021 Victory Shield and later played in a tournament in North Wales against Turkey, Brazil and Spain. With the under-17s qualifying for the final stages, Alfie travelled with the squad to Hungary in May 2023 where he made appearances as a substitute.
Moving into his second full-time season, Alfie made his first-team debut against Reading in the EFL Trophy in September 2023. He also appeared against Arsenal under-21s in the same competition as well as featuring in both of City's FA Youth Cup ties during the 2023/24 campaign prior to having a loan spell with Tavistock from December 2023. Later returning to St James' Park, Alfie was released in the summer of 2024 without being offered a professional contract and was back at Tavistock at the start of the 2024/25 season.
