Becoming a scholar/trainee in July 2022, Sam had already played in the team that lost to Bideford on penalties in the final of the Devon St Luke’s Bowl in May 2022. He was a regular member of the under-18s in both the EFL Youth Alliance and FA Youth Cup during 2022/23 and also appeared in first-team pre-season friendlies ahead of 2023/24.

He made his first-team debut as a second-year scholar against Reading in the EFL Trophy in September 2023 and later featured in both of the club's 2023/24 FA Youth Cup ties prior to having a loan spell with Tavistock from December 2023. Later returning to St James' Park, Sam was released in the summer of 2024 without being offered a professional contract.
