Match 29
3rd April 2005
Penzance (Home)
Sunday 3rd April 2005
South West Women's
Football League Premier Division
Exeter City Ladles 5 Penzance 2
Exeter City Ladies finished off their league campaign in style with a 5-2 win over Penzance at Speed's Meadow. The victory came courtesy of an exceptional second-half performance in which the Grecians overwhelmed their opponents with some super attacking football.
Just a few weeks ago City were haunted by the threat of relegation, but a sensational run of five consecutive victories has propelled Steve McLear's side into fifth place in the South West Women's Premier Division. Sally Ames collected a Jo Goldsworthy flick and struck her first of the season just after half time to set the Grecians on their way to victory. Emma Redwood doubled the advantage on the hour before the visitors pulled a goal back. However, on 78 minutes Rachel Edwards's deflected shot restored City's two-goal cushion. Penzance scored again to make it 3-2 on 82 minutes, but any hopes of a comeback were quashed almost immediately from the kick off as the Grecians cut through the visitors with some slick passing, the ball eventually reaching Edwards who finished well to make it 4-2. Tracey Cross put the seal on the impressive display with a sweetly struck volley from 20 yards in the dying moments.
Manager, Steve McLear said: "To pick up maximum points over the last five games really is superb. All the things we have been working on throughout the season clicked, and it is just a shame we couldn't find this sort of form earlier in the season. But the girls can be very proud of their efforts as we have had five really hard games and they have produced the goods."
